The winners of the annual Santa Maria Arts Council Individual Grants in the Arts are set to receive recognition on May 7 at the Marian Theater at Allan Hancock College.
Twelve artists working in the media of dance, drama, music, and visual arts will share a prize pool of $13,900. First and second place winners will receive $1,500 and $1,000 respectively in addition to recipients of the Nat Fast Memorial Grant, the Ian M. Hassett Memorial Scholarship, and three Los Padres Artist Guild Scholarships.
Visual artists’ displays and performances in music, dance, and drama will be showcased beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Marian Theatre at Hancock, 800 S. College Drive, Santa Maria. The evening includes hors d’oeuvres, wine, and the opportunity to meet new artists. The reception begins at 5:30 with performances and awards at 6:30 p.m.
Each year the grants are awarded in the name of an individual or individuals who have made a significant impact on the arts in Northern Santa Barbara County. This year’s Individual Grants in the Arts honorees are artists, art supporters, and arts advocates Craig and Linda Shafer.
The Shafers have been involved in the arts for nearly 40 years in the greater Santa Maria Valley. As artists, they performed and choreographed for Hancock’s Dance Department for nearly 15 years. They have spent the last 15 years active in the Arts Council; Craig was president for 10 years. The Shafers have been on staff at PCPA for more than 20 years, supporting PCPA’s students, actors, technicians, and various programs.
Showcase tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students, and $10 for children. Visit smartscouncil.org to order tickets in advance.
