• Pinewood Derby Workshops: The Lompoc Police Activities League is holding workshops to gear up for the city’s Pinewood Derby Race on March 17 at Anderson Recreation Center. The workshops are open to all kids ages 5 and older, and will be held on March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at La Honda Elementary School, and on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Clarence Ruth Elementary. • Coastal Valley Soccer Club: Open tryouts for the Coastal Valley Soccer Club (CVSC) will be held for boys ages 9 to 17 from 10 a.m. to noon on Feb. 25 and March 3 at Crossroads Field on College Avenue in Santa Maria. Tryouts for girls will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Players must be accompanied by an adult to sign a waiver and should bring cleats, shin guards, a soccer ball, and water. • Santa Maria Amateur Boxing: Local amateur boxers will step into the ring for a cause on March 3 at the Minami Community Center, located at 600 W. Enos Drive. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the first bout will start at 6 p.m. Tickets cost $10 at the door, or $5 pre-sale at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, 600 S. McClelland St. Children 10 and younger get in free when accompanied by an adult. The event is a collaboration of the City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department, the Santa Maria Police Activities League (PAL), and the People for Leisure and Youth, Inc.
