Sphinx and Drinks gala featured in Guadalupe
The Dunes Center in Guadalupe is hosting its Sphinx and Drinks gala event on July 21 to benefit the center’s educational programs and activities.Ā
The event is to commemorate the unveiling of the most recent artifacts excavated from Cecil B. DeMille’s Ten Commandments movie set site in the Guadalupe dunes. The event features 1920s period attire, music by the Tipsy Gypsies, a cash bar featuring 1920s-themed craft cocktails, local wines and beer, hors d’oeuvres by the Far Western Tavern, a live auction, and other museum activities.Ā
The event goes from 5 to 9 p.m.; tickets are $75. The event happens at the Dunes Center, 1065 Guadalupe St., Guadalupe. More info: dunescenter.org/sphinx/.
Los Padres Artist Guild hosts studio and garden tour Ā
On July 21, the Los Padres Artist Guild will host its 15th annual art and garden tour, which invites guests to visit private studios and gardens where local artists display and sell their original work.Ā
With the purchase of a $10 tour book available at several local business locations, guests will get a map to the various homes that will be open. Guests will be able to meet several artists at each location. Art featured will include wearable art, fine art, wood items, ceramics, hand-painted silk scarves, knitted pieces, and home arts. There are special gift baskets available as prizes this year as well.Ā

Wildling Museum hosts weaving class
The Wildling Museum in Solvang is hosting a class for participants to learn the basketry technique of random weave, using rattan reed and vines on July 28.
The random weave technique allows the weaver to create a free-form basket or sculpture or a more structured form such as a bowl, tray, or dish. Students will have an opportunity to incorporate local botanicals found in yards and gardens, into their baskets. The finished baskets will be approximately 5 to 10 inches in diameter. The class is suitable for any level of experience with basketry techniques and/or basketry materials. The students should be able to finish their basket during the class.Ā
The class includes all materials and written directions. To provide adequate instruction time, the number of workshop participants is limited to 14. The class runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., which includes a half hour lunch break.
