Santa Maria residents will have a chance to sound off on water issues at the Central Coast Agricultural Water Quality Coalition Symposium on Nov. 6. The symposium will highlight the appearance of nitrates and other substances in water sources and its relation to fertilizer.

According to a press release from the coalition, a representative from the California Center for Water Resources will discuss the newest in nitrate detection equipment. Also, the U.S. Geological Survey will present information about how to determine the source and age of nitrates in groundwater using radio isotopic tracing techniques.

The Central Coast Agricultural Water Quality Coalition monitors agricultural water quality throughout the Central Coast, from southern San Mateo County to Santa Barbara County. The coalition is made up of volunteer agricultural leaders from a variety of organizations in the agriculture industry.

The symposium will be held at the Good Neighbor Bakery, 2660 Industrial Parkway, in Santa Maria. For more information, call Kay Mercer at 208-8039. Reservations are requested by Nov. 3.
