Know a local restaurant with really tasty chili? Well, Legal Aid of Santa Barbara County is now accepting applications for the Seventh Annual Taste for Justice chili cook-off. The event will be held March 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Santa Maria Airport, inside a World War II hanger. And because of the vintage setting, it will be a “Salute to the Troops.”
There will be two types of chili in the contest: non-vegetarian and vegetarian. Each type of chili will have a first, second, and third place. Then, the two first place winners will face off to earn the prestige of taking the “Gourmet Gavel Award” to their restaurant until next year’s competition. The winning restaurants will also have the bragging rights of having the best chili.
The competition will have a panel of judges, but the people will have their say, too, since there is a “People’s Choice Award.”
In addition to having the opportunity to taste some delicious chili, people will be able to buy raffle tickets for a chance to go on a tank ride. There will also be a chance to win raffle tickets for a box of 52 bottles of wine from the Santa Ynez Valley area, as well as a live and silent auction.
Central City Surplus is the host sponsor. Wineries at the event will include Daniel Gehrs Wines, Geissinger Winery, Lion’s Peak, and Witchcraft Winery; restaurant Burrito Loco, Skip Gibson’s BBQ, Testa’s Bistro, and Coffee and Company; Solvang Brew Company; along with Cabot Cheese, and Culligan.
