The Santa Maria Utilities Department announced the winners of the 2016 Water Awareness Poster contest at the May 3 City Council meeting, where students were given awards, trophies, and prizes for their creative efforts in spreading awareness of water conservation. The competition took place among third graders in the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, who submitted a total of more than 200 posters.
Four students took top honors, including first, second, third place, and an honorable mention. Valerie Pinon of Mrs. Billinger’s class at Robert Bruce Elementary took first place for her poster. Anthony Lopez from Mrs. McPeter’s class at Alvin School won second place. Valeria Castro from Mrs. Billinger’s class at Robert Bruce was awarded the third place honor. The honorable mention went to Noemi Rincon from Mrs. Mahoney’s class at Ontiveros School.
The contest is the seventh annual competition organized by the Santa Maria Utilities Department. More information is available at cityofsantamaria.org and the city’s Facebook page.
