The city of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is extending the successful Safe N’ Strong summer program through the school year. Safe N’ Strong is designed to help keep youth active and safe during the after-school hours. Participants will enjoy interactive games and crafts projects while making new friends. The program is for youth in kindergarten through sixth grade and is free.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Safe N’ Strong program will run Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to dusk at the following locations: Newlove Community Building, 1619 S. Thornburg; Oakley Park, 1300 N. Western Ave.; and Tunnell Park 1100 N. Palisade Drive.

A comparable program for junior high students will run at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, located at 600 S. McClelland St., from 2:30 through 5:30 p.m. each school day.

There is no cost to participate in this program, and healthy snacks will be provided by the Santa Barbara County food bank (or FoodBank of Santa Barbara County) and Community Action Commission agencies. No registration is required; participants can just drop in at any site.
