Smoking and the use of other tobacco products could be banned in local parks, pending decisions from the Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Commission and the Santa Maria City Council.

On Aug. 12, the commission will hold a public hearing on the ban during its regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at Santa Maria City Hall, 110 E. Cook St., in Santa Maria.

The commission welcomes public comment on the proposed ban in order to forward recommendations on to the Santa Maria City Council.

A copy of the draft ordinance is available on the city’s Web site, ci.santa-maria.ca.gov, or can be picked up at the Santa Maria Public Library or at City Hall.

People can also submit comments on the potential ban to the Director of Recreation and Parks at 615 S. McClelland St., Santa Maria, CA, 93454, by 5 p.m. on Aug. 11.
