Four college-bound seniors began their collegiate career with a little extra cash, thanks to scholarships provided by Tri City Sound. The Sweet Adelines International Chorus serving Lompoc and Santa Maria valleys awards scholarships each year to graduating students who participated in their high school vocal music program for at least two years and who plan on participating in a college or junior college vocal music program.
The 2010 scholarship recipients include Laura Ceja, a graduate of Santa Maria High School who intends to study communications at University of California, Santa Cruz; Serena Gardner, a graduate of Righetti High School, who is studying chemical engineering at UC Los Angeles; Connie Tran, a Righetti graduate studying human biology at UC San Diego; and Meriam Vejiga, a graduate of Pioneer Valley High School, who is studying bio-engineering at UC Merced.
Each scholarship recipient was awarded $150.
Funds are raised through member donations and chorus earnings from performances, Singing Valentines, and other special events held throughout the year.
Tri City Sound is affiliated with Sweet Adelines International, a nonprofit that offers traditional tunes in four-part barbershop harmony. The chorus is open to all women interested in learning about barbershop-style music, singing, performing, and sisterhood. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 6:45 to 9 p.m. at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, 4725 S. Bradley Road in Orcutt.
