On Oct. 25, the Santa Maria Valley Humane Society will host its monthly microchipping clinic from 10 a.m. to noon. The clinic is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, and both cats and dogs are welcome.

The fee is $32 per microchip, per pet, and $27 if the owner is a Humane Society member. This cost includes online registration of the microchip with the owners’ contact information. Microchip clinics are scheduled every month. People unable to make it to the Oct. 25 clinic can find a schedule of future clinic dates online at smvhs.org.

According to an estimate from the Humane Society, more than 1 million pets wind up in animal shelters every year and are euthanized because they’re never reunited with their owners.

The Humane Society is working to reverse this statistic by encouraging more pet owners to microchip their pets.

The Santa Maria Valley Humane Society adoption facility and spay/neuter clinic is located at 751 Black Road in Santa Maria.
