Once again, the NRC has endured endless complaints from people like Mothers for Peace’s Jane Swanson and “the same old characters opposed to Diablo Canyon” (“The confidence game,” Nov. 28). I challenge any of these activists to show evidence that they actively supported the development of Yucca Mountain in Nevada for the long-term storage of spent reactor fuel. The records show that most were vehemently against the project and supported Sen. Harry Reid’s actions to not have it built in his backyard. The anti-nuclear crowd knew that by blocking Yucca Mountain, they would have their ace-in-the-hole to shut down all nuclear power plants. Now they whine that Yucca doesn’t exist.

I also object to the article’s implication that the pro-Diablo advocates at the NRC meetings are all in some way connected to the nuclear industry. Many speakers are in this category, but I for one just base my opinions on the realities of our energy and environmental future.
