Local artists created 10 birdhouses over the summer as contributions to the Santa Maria Arts Council’s (SMAC) seventh annual Birdhouse Fundraiser. Some of this year’s featured artists include Marilyn Dover Benson, Beverly Johnson, Abby Hogan, Jason Boeln, Lindie Simone, and Dale Cornwell.
The birdhouses can be viewed at the council’s booth during the Orcutt Children’s Art Foundation (OCAF) Chalk Festival, which takes place in Old Town Orcutt on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Raffle tickets cost $1 and will be available for a chance to win one of the birdhouses. All proceeds will go directly to prizes awarded to young artists participating in the SMAC’s 40th annual Student Art Show, scheduled for spring 2020.
The council first introduced the Student Art Show in 1980, in response to cutbacks in school art programs. The SMAC’s goal continues to be the encouragement of teachers to keep the visual arts alive in local schools.
