A day-long celebration in honor of the Santa Maria Public Library’s fifth birthday will take place on Aug. 24. Two local bands, a barbecue lunch, and various children’s activities are scheduled for the day.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. inside the library and outside in the Lavagnino Plaza. The only cost would be for people who want to buy a barbecue lunch: $8 for a tri-tip sandwich, salsa, chips, a drink, and a treat.

The Appellation Bluegrass Band will play California bluegrass music from 10 a.m. to noon and the Amigos will play jazz and swing from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Two special story time programs will be given in the Youth Service’s Altrusa Theater—for preschoolers from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and for kindergartners through second-graders from 11:30 a.m. to noon.

Professional magician Shawn McMaster will put on a performance in the theater at 2 p.m., and games will be available for children to play all afternoon.

Friends of the Santa Maria Library is sponsoring the event, and will be serving birthday cake in the library lobby at 3 p.m. The organization will also be giving away 300 children’s books. For more information, contact Joyce Hall, president of the Friends of the Santa Maria Library at 925-7116.
