Grimm, 83, came to Santa Maria in 1987 after a full career as a high school teacher and counselor.

ā€œI just wasn’t ready to stop teaching,ā€ Grimm told the Sun.

After starting part-time in the ESL department—though it wasn’t quite a ā€œdepartmentā€ yet back then—Grimm quickly climbed her way to lead teacher and took on more credit and non-credit classes.

ā€œWhen we started out, we didn’t have any place to be,ā€ Grimm said. ā€œWe didn’t have any books. We didn’t have a curriculum.ā€

But as lead teacher, Grimm was able to change all that, ushering in a new era for the ESL department.

ā€œShe was very instrumental in the ESL program,ā€ Grimm’s co-worker Donna Shpak said. ā€œShe inspired a lot of people because the department was kind of treated like an unwanted stepchild at the college for a long time.ā€

When asked the secret to her success, Grimm said: ā€œYou have to always identify the needs of your students and teach from there.ā€

Along with her masterful teaching skills, Grimm was also known for her mentoring ability.

ā€œYou can ask her about a problem or dilemma you’re having in the classroom and immediately she will have an answer. She’ll say, ā€˜Well, why don’t you try this,’ or ā€˜This is something that really worked for me,ā€™ā€ co-worker Evelyn Delany said.

And while some might view working part-time as an ESL instructor as a thankless job, Grimm said that her work at Allan Hancock College has been some of the most rewarding work she’s accomplished in her lifetime.

ā€œMy 21 years [have] been the brightest spot in my life,ā€ Grimm said. ā€œI enjoyed teaching high school, but working at the college was a completely different ballgame.ā€

Grimm added that she will miss working with her adult students.

ā€œThey’re such wonderful people,ā€ she said. ā€œThey just put you to shame with their graces, and they work so hard.ā€

Grimm said she ā€œleft the option open to come back in a yearā€ but is expecting to retire at the end of this year. Still, she is confident that the program will continue to thrive without her.
