Santa Barbara County’s Emergency Medical Services Agency recently awarded Marian Medical Center with a STEMI Center designation, certifying the hospital is specially equipped to treat sudden heart attacks caused by coronary artery blockage.

The title became effective on April 12. Requirements considered for STEMI designation included quick response time, licensure as a cardiac catheterization laboratory, and availability of communication systems necessary for treating patients suffering from ST-segment myocardial infarction heart attacks.

Catholic Healthcare West has recognized Marian with a “Best Practice” Award for the Heart Center’s quick response in cardiac emergencies and treatment of patients with congestive heart failure exceeding national standards.
