Being a material girl might have been cool in the ’80s, but on April 28, local certified public accountant Trent Benedetti will be holding a town hall meeting to tackle the ongoing problem of financial irresponsibility. He hopes to show how it’s better to be financially responsible. The meeting will be held at the Abel Maldonado Center, 600 McClelland St., Santa Maria, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

At the meeting, attendees will sign an online petition declaring their support of fiscal responsibility. The event will include distinguished members of the community speaking on financial literacy issues and how a healthy relationship with money has a positive effect on the community. Benedetti is recommending that kids between ages 13 and 18 attend; they’re also asked to bring their parents.

Central Coast Financial Literacy Coalition is sponsoring the event, with help from Stand Up For Financial Literacy and the International Association of Financial, Sport, and Celebrity Advisers.

The local town hall meeting is a part of a recent movement aiming to spark financial responsibility in young minds. VH1, the music channel, is also helping the movement with a new ā€œdocudrama,ā€ Broke and Famous. The series will provide a look into a financial illiterate’s life. The first in the series will focus on Willie Aames, former child actor.

Anyone interested in attending the meeting should call 922-4881 to RSVP.
