
Kim āThe Road Hogā Graham, Allan Hancock Collegeās director of public safety, planted a big wet one on Duke the Pig April 28 after winning the collegeās first-ever āKiss a Pigā fundraiser. Nancy āBabeā Meddings, the interim dean of learning resources, took second, and college president JosĆ© M. āNapoleonā Ortiz came in third.
Overall, the 11 āKiss a Pigā contestants raised $1,610 for the collegeās general scholarship fund. Graham brought in the largest sumāabout $400āmaking her the lucky pig kisser. Each dollar was worth one vote.
Graham got into the pig-kissing mood by donning a pig hat, a pink corkscrew tail, and pig-shaped earrings.
āMy department is going to love this,ā Graham said after pecking the plump porker on the nose.
The collegeās Friends of the Library organization sponsored the fundraiser. Faculty librarian Leslie Mosson said the money will help students struggling in todayās economy pay for their education.
Before getting kissed, Duke, the guitar playing pig from the nonprofit sanctuary Lilā Orphan Hammies in Solvang, wowed the crowd with a tune on his guitar. Musical group āThe Bacon Boys,ā with featured singer Holly āIn Hog Heavenā Costello, also played a few songs.
Other pig-kissing contestants included trustees Larry āFine Swineā Lahr, Tim āRazorbackā Bennett, and Henry āWilburā Grennan; staff members Kate āWhen Pigs Flyā Adams, Rob āSwine Fluā Lennihan, Louie āSweating Like a Pigā Quintana, Brain āHammā Dill, and Rocky āCocciutoā Graziano; and Associated Student Body Government president Marcus āSpider-Pigā King.
