•Treasure Hunt: Walking is healthy, and the city of Santa Maria found a way to make it fun, too! On Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., the Parks and Recreation Department will be host to a community walk featuring a “Treasure Hunt” theme. This a two-mile walk open to all ages; meet at Town Center East in front of Lost World Pets. The community is encouraged to get out and walk together. For more information, call the Santa Maria Parks and Recreation department at 925-0951, Ext.260.

• Volleyball: Bump, set, spike! The Santa Maria Youth Volleyball League is open for registration for the Spring 2013 season that kicks off April 1. The eight-week program teaches the fundamental basics of volleyball: serving, passing, setting, spiking, and game strategies. There are four divisions (ages 7 and 8, 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 13 and 15) available to boys and girls. Register before Dec. 1 for an early registration discount. For more information, visit usyvl.org.

Walk it out: Venture to beautiful Los Flores Ranch Park for a guided nature walk. Scheduled for the second Saturday of each month, walks start at 9 a.m. and last two hours. A docent will teach participants about oak trees, plant life, and the different animal species in the park as they walk. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars and a lunch to enjoy at one of the many scenic picnic areas. Walks are free for Santa Maria residents and children 15 and younger; $3 for non-resident adults. For more information, call the Santa Maria Parks and Recreation department at 925-0951, Ext. 260.
