Sims’s name has also been stenciled in large letters on the gym floor near two of the entrances. Fesler Junior High School faculty members voted earlier this year to honor Sims.

Ā Doug Sims, Quentin’s son, said the honor would have meant a lot to the lifelong educator and Golden Dukes player. Doug said his father was best known for discipline and reading.

ā€œHe felt reading was the most important aspect of an education,ā€ Doug said. ā€œIf a person could read, and read well, anything was possible.ā€

The young Sims got to experience his father’s educational leadership when he and his sisters attended Fesler Junior High as children.

ā€œIt was fun,ā€ Doug said of having his dad as his principal. ā€œYou think it would have been bad, but it was actually a lot of fun.ā€Ā

Fesler Junior High School is located at 1100 E. Fesler St. in Santa Maria. For more information, call the school office at 361-7880.
