When North Carolina artist Luke Haynes and the local C Gallery asked people “What image makes you think of American nostalgia?” they received 700 responses. The 10 most repeated answers were inspiration for 10 quilts Haynes sewed for his show, American Nostalgia, hanging at the C Gallery this month.
Haynes is an architect—and now a fabric artist and quilter, as well. With his craft, he tries to renovate the way quilts are perceived, and he aims to blur the distinction between craft and art.
Haynes’ work currently shows in Brooklyn, N.Y., and has exhibited across the country and even abroad in England. Most recently, his work was accepted for exhibition in Chicago.
“Working with Luke is a stimulating experience for me,” said Gallery Director Connie Rohde. “He’s young and progressive, edgy, articulate, interactive with his audience, and highly energized. His creativity is fluent and unending.”
[image-3] His show at the C Gallery won’t just reveal the survey responses, but will offer a fresh interpretation of quilting.
