The final event in a series of countywide job and resource fairs is scheduled for June 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building in Santa Maria. The fair is open to job seekers of all ages, with a special focus on local youth, and will feature booths representing numerous local government agencies and private organizations.
“This is another opportunity for Santa Maria employers, businesses, and resource agencies to connect with local job-seekers and those needing extra support. Summer will soon be here, school will be out, and many of our youth will be looking for jobs,” Economic Development Commission Director Dave Cross said in press release.
The latest figures released by the Employment Development Department lists Santa Maria’s unemployment rate at 8.6 percent, with 3,400 residents unemployed. The report also indicates Santa Maria is the second highest labor force for the county with 40,200 people —just behind the city of Santa Barbara.
The Empolyment Development Department has set up job fair preparation workshops at the Workforce Resource Center at 1410 S. Broadway. All of the workshops are on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, and the subjects include:
• June 4: The hidden job market
• June 11: Interviewing skills
• June 18: Using transferable skills to get a job
• June 25: Getting hired using social media
People interested in attending the workshops must call 348-3210 to register.
