The innovative firm, which employs 400 employees at its manufacturing and corporate headquarters at 2727 Skyway Drive, has been a Santa Maria fixture for more than 35 years.Ā Ā

The company was started in 1974 by local dentist Dr. Robert Ibsen, who started out providing basic materials to dentists in the area. After 10 years, he had the foresight to identify a demand for cosmetic teeth-whitening products that could be marketed directly to the consumer. He couldn’t find anything on the market that provided what he was seeking, so he headed into his own lab and created REMBRANDTĀ®, the first whitening toothpaste in that category.

In 2008, Ibsen sold the company to DLJ Merchant Banking Partners. Late last year, DenMat was acquired by Centre Partners, a private equity firm, and Mill Street Partners. Then in January of this year, less than two months after changing hands, DenMat acquired a portfolio of dental products from Discus Dental. The new portfolio includes a line of impression materials and a line of bonding agents.

ā€œDenMat now owns or has exclusive licenses covering more than 1,000 patents,ā€ said Steve Hulan, marketing director at DenMat. ā€œThe vision for this firm is to establish a platform as one of the leading direct marketing provider of clinical products to dentists.ā€

The acquisition of Discus Dental patents will also require an expansion or re-working of DenMat’s lab in Santa Maria.

Some of those employed at DenMat are lab techs who take the impressions made by dentists and create customized LumineersĀ® for patients. Employees also manufacture and package other DenMat products such as restoratives and impression materials, including Discus Dental’s Vanilla Biteā„¢, Chocolate Biteā„¢, and Clear Biteā„¢. DenMat currently markets its products to dentists globally, both directly and through distribution, group practice, and lab partnerships. That is quite an expansion from Dr. Ibsen’s original vision in 1974, and one that continues to improve people’s smiles and dental health worldwide.
