Calling all horse-lovers—the Animali Farm, located on Tepusquet Road in Santa Maria, needs your help.

The nonprofit animal sanctuary is looking for people willing to adopt nearly a dozen appaloosa horses. The sanctuary was recently contacted by an Alberta, Canada-based appaloosa and quarterhorse breeder who, because of medical problems, has decided to put her horses up for auction on June 6 in Ponoka, Alberta.

According to a press release from the sanctuary, “The sad reality for many horses sold at auction is a trip to the slaughterhouse.” Some horses sell to good homes or are purchased by a rescue facility, but many of the horses are sold to slaughterhouses.

People interested in adopting can view pictures of the horses available at the

In a recent interview with the Sun, Animali Farm co-director Jennifer Johns said the sanctuary has already managed to get four of the 15 total horses adopted.

“And several are in the process of being adopted,” Johns said. “But it becomes complicated because the horses are located in Canada, 2,000 miles away.”

A recent donation of $20,000, however, has cut down considerably on the cost of transportation, Johns added. But donations are always welcome, especially from people who are unable to adopt a horse but still want to help.
