Garson Olivieri, music teacher at Cabrillo High School in Lompoc, was named the 2018 Santa Barbara Bowl Performing Arts Teacher of the Year. This fall, Olivieri will be honored at the fifth annual A Salute to Teachers, a gala event recognizing educators from Santa Barbara County.

ā€œI was both surprised and deeply humbled to be named Santa Barbara Performing Arts Teacher of the Year for Santa Barbara County,ā€ Olivieri said in a press release from the Santa Barbara County Education Office (SBCEO). ā€œIt’s an honor to work with the students at Cabrillo every day. My students, and the families who love and support their pursuit of music, are an inspiration to me.ā€

The award was created in 2015 in a partnership between the SBCEO and the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation Education Outreach, which is dedicated to supporting the performing arts in the county. Oliviera will succeed Brett Larsen in the distinction, who is a teacher at Adams Elementary School in Santa Barbara.

ā€œOne of Santa Barbara Bowl’s Education Outreach priorities is ensuring access to the performing arts for all youth in Santa Barbara County,ā€ Graham Farrar, the Santa Barbara Bowl’s Education Committee chair and board secretary, said in the release. ā€œEducators like Garson play a vital role in positively enhancing the lives of students every day. We thank Garson for his dedication to his students and to his community.ā€
