On Jan. 18, Rep. Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara) spoke at the graduation ceremony for Educational Center United Nations, where students were recognized for completing elementary and middle school education certifications.
The Mexican Department of Education works jointly with the center to help students of all ages receive a basic education. It helps pave the way for completing a GED or finishing English as a Second Language programs.
The certificate is equivalent to completing a basic education in Mexico, which many of the programs’ participants never had the opportunity to do or to even attend school.
Capps’ office sent out a press release before the ceremony.
“This ceremony will be a celebration of a lot of hard work by each and every one of these students,” Capps said. “I look forward to acknowledging their accomplishments at the graduation ceremony Saturday.”
The ceremony took place at the Radisson Hotel in Santa Maria.
