Students from throughout Santa Barbara County will have to think very carefully before they act when they compete in the annual spelling bee on Feb. 20 in the auditorium of the Santa Barbara County Education Office.
The elementary school contest for fourth- through sixth-grade students is set to start at 9 a.m. Junior high school students in grades seventh through ninth will begin competing at 1:30 p.m. Students are expected to arrive a half-hour before their start times, at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
The competition is a written test, and first- and second-place winners will be eligible to compete in state competitions. The elementary school bee will be on April 26 in Stockton and the junior high bee is scheduled for May 3 in San Rafael.
The county’s education office is located at 4400 Cathedral Oaks Road in Santa Barbara and the upcoming bee is open to students from public and private schools throughout the county.
