After Martin Luther King Day, January is a bit bare when it comes to special observances and holidays. But on Jan. 30, the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum will hold its first-ever ā€œNat Fast Day.ā€ Admission will be free.

The day’s exhibit will focus on Fast’s expertise—the fine arts—and he will mentor kids interested in art. Young participants will receive a free watercolors set as well, donated by the Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation.

Discovery Museum staffers will lead attendees through painting workshops, and cartoonist Lance Sawyer will hold a demonstration.

According to a press release from the Discovery Museum, the day is modeled after ā€œCommunity Day,ā€ held every August in honor of the birthday of RH Tesene—who was a community leader and very supportive of the museum.

Although the day is centered on Fast’s contributions, all of the regular exhibits will be open for visitors as well. Some regular exhibits include local marine life, agriculture and farming, and some exotic life—as well as a kid’s chance to trek about on the Red Planet. The museum will be open from noon to 4 p.m.

ā€œI hope families that do not usually come will take advantage of this free day and see the wonderful things to offer,ā€ museum executive director Kelly White O’Neill said.
