More than 100 cattle ranchers and dignitaries recognized Nipomo’s Jocko’s Steak House as the best beef restaurant in the state on Oct. 6.

At the event, the California Beef Council awarded the restaurant its 2009 California Beef Backer Award, which recognizes restaurants that promote the beef industry through menus, promotions, and popular entrees.

After almost 80 years of business in Nipomo as a saloon, Jocko’s underwent a transformation with help from Fred and George Knotts, who opened the current location in 1962. It has since grown to become a favorite for locals and visitors. The restaurant is now operated by Fred’s wife Sandy and their son Mike.

Jocko’s is at 125 N. Thompson Ave. in Nipomo.
