Dust off that green thumb
Gardenersāor anyone interested in learning about starting a gardenācan bring their tools to Elwin Mussell Senior Center, 510 E. Park Ave., from 9 to 11 a.m. on April 4 for a āØgardening workshop featuring local gardeners.
The topic will be āVictory Gardens.ā Attendees will learn about preparing soil using compost and other ways to ensure a good harvest. Victory gardens were popular during the World War II era as a way to help families during war-year shortages. The concept has seen a resurgence in these difficult economic times.

Santa Maria implemented a Yard Materials Recycling Pilot Program the first week in February. Compost from this program will be available at the workshop, which is sponsored by the Santa Maria Utilities and Recreation and Parks departments, in association with Harvest Blend Compost. Thereās no fee to attend, and guests will get a sample of compost (bring your own container) and seedlings.
To sign up for this workshop or for more information regarding water conservation and recycling, contact the utilities department at 925-0951, Ext. 7270.
