Political theorist, diplomat, and inventor Benjamin Franklin was no stranger to kites. This witty man, who was also a founding father of our nation, was known as a polymathic person because of his incredible skills in many disciplines. He was fond of chess, music, and, of course, inventions! When asked what the use of a new invention was, Benjamin Franklin retorted, ā€œWhat is the use of a new-born child?ā€

In 1752, Franklin conducted his famous kite experiments through which he harnessed the electricity from lighting in a conductor jar. His invention of the lighting rod saved many houses from catching on fire, which was a common occurrence during the 1700s. Franklin also invented the simple odometer and the bifocals.

Here at the Discovery Museum, we take the business of children experimenting and learning seriously. This month, children can explore kite flying and gain experience with the aerodynamics behind this wonderful art form. They can even examine a kite similar to Mr. Franklins’, which was made with a silk handkerchief, two sticks of cedar wood, and thread. The silk, which was sewn to the frame with a heavy cord, was used because as, Franklin explained, it was ā€œfitter to bear the wet and wind of a thunder-gust without tearing.ā€ We are excited to create a period accurate kite that will resemble the famous one used by Benjamin Franklin.

(And don’t forget: Join the museum and Santa Maria’s Parks and Recreation Department at Rotary Centennial Park on April 17 to watch amazing kite flying, participate in kite games, and fly your own kite as a family.)
