Though the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center helped facilitate and now houses the fruits of an archeological excavation at the set of Cecil B. DeMille’s Ten Commandments. Much of the set still lies submerged beneath the dunes sand. The Dunes Center recently submitted a proposal for funding from the Santa Barbara County Coastal Resource Enhancement Fund to excavate an entire sphinx statue before it succumbs to the elements.
The dunes sand has preserved much of the plaster set well, but the more the plaster is exposed to the open air, the less chance it has of being restored. Those who want to help the project with funding, volunteer work, or by soliciting local politicians can contact the Dunes Center at 343-2455 or admin@dunescenter.org.
