Trash the liberal-created culture

These so-called progressives are undermining our safety

BY LARRY BARGENQUAST

The reason conservatives always oppose liberalism is because everything liberals do is either foolish, inept, or wrong-headed. Whether it’s global warming, ObamaCare, jobs, education, immigration, income equality, Christianity, racism, or class envy—everything they do ultimately ends up as a screw-up, a lie, an excuse, or a scandal.

Whenever there’s another mass shooting—Sandy Hook, Virginia Tech, Aurora, or Fort Hood—instead of dealing with the cause, which is a growing mental illness caused by Gotterdammerung (a breakdown of society), right away the same people who created the problem in the first place make it all about gun control.

According to the FBI, there were 8,583 firearm murders in the United States in a recent year, and there were at least 800,000 murders prevented by firearms. That means even by the FBI’s lowest estimate there were 100 times more violent crimes prevented by firearms than were caused by them. So what’s the liberal solution? Take everyone’s guns away.

Something that exemplifies this kind of thinking is a government agency called the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, or SAMSHA. According to a recent Wall Street Journal article, “The Definition of Insanity” (April 1), SAMSHA gives half its $3.6 billion yearly budget to the states but gives the other half to actually undermine treatment for severe mental disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar, or schizoaffective disorder.

A remnant of the anti-psychiatry movement of the 1980s, SAMSHA undercuts efforts to help the severely mentally ill. It denies the reality of mental illness, opposes psychiatric care, and likes to put the patient in charge of his own recovery plan. They think psychiatric labeling is a pseudoscientific practice of limited value and spend millions on anti-bullying coloring books, online kids games, and pamphlets on how to handle emotional distress after floods. “Take care of pets ... Nature and animals can help us to feel better when we’re down.”

Their 2013 Alternatives Conference included a session titled “Dance Your Way to Wellness and Recovery” and a presentation from the “Hearing Voices Network,” which believes that hearing voices is a natural part of human experience, according to the Journal article. All but four of their 288 programs are aimed at helping substance abusers, enhancing parenting skills, or helping kids recognize “anxiety.” There’s no mention of assisted outpatient therapy even though it’s the most effective program for extreme illness. Instead, they choose to focus mostly on the “worried well.”

This is the type of culture that modern liberals want us to keep feeding: trillions of taxpayer dollars for thousands of government programs where they and all their so-called progressive thinkers, instead of coming up with practical, workable, common-sense solutions, use unicorn theories and wishful thinking to solve complex 21st century problems. All these programs should be abolished along with the intellectual left and their supporters and relegated to the growing trash pile of unfortunate eras in human history.
