A VARIED LANDSCAPE: Professional cyclists battled 102-degree heat at last year’s 805 Criterium race in Buellton. This year’s event, scheduled for May 9 through 11, now features two races in Lompoc, one race in Buellton, and a host of expanded spectator festivities in both locations.

The Central Coast 805 Criterium Bike race returns to the valley with one race in Buellton and two races now available in Lompoc.

A criterium is a bike race held on a short course that usually loops through closed off city streets.

Scheduled for May 9 through 11, the race has also expanded to include a Friday evening kick-off event at the Allan Hancock College Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.

“The local communities, event partners, and Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s 805 brand have really stepped up to make this a showcase event for the Central Coast,” race director Mike Hecker said. “The word is out and we are now attracting many of the nation’s top cyclists.”

Riders of all skill levels and ages are invited to participate in the event. Races will be held according to skill level and age group, and kick off at 7:30 a.m. each day. In addition to cash prizes, riders will have the opportunity to win numerous prizes that include wine, beer, and various cycling gear.

The races benefit the Santa Ynez Valley Humane Society and the Lompoc Police Foundation.
