Learn from afar through classes at Allan Hancock CollegeBY AMY ASMANWant to go to college but can’t make it to campus? This fall, Allan Hancock College will offer 178 distance learning classes, all taught over the Internet, or using video, DVD, or live video streaming. Enrollment in the college’s distance learning classes has increased dramatically over the last several years, according to a press release from the school. In 1996-97, fewer than 500 students were enrolled in Internet classes. In fall 2008, there were more than 2,800 students enrolled in distance learning classes. Most students report taking distance learning classes because they offer flexibility in scheduling based on work, family, or transportation constraints. The classes offer students the flexibility of completing courses at home or on campus computers at their convenience. However, some Internet classes require limited onsite attendance or test proctoring. Students enrolling in Internet distance learning courses must have an e-mail address. Students who don’t have Internet access at home can use a computer at the college’s Santa Maria campus Admissions and Records office, or at the Lompoc Valley Center Learning Resources Center. An assortment of subjects will be offered, including anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer office technology, geography, history, marketing, Italian, fire technology, algebra, psychology, and more. Fall classes begin Aug. 24. WebReg (online registration) for fall classes began June 29 and continues through Aug. 10. For more information about registration and distance learning classes, call 922-6966, Ext. 3248. |
