American GI Forum Education Foundation awards scholarships

The American GI Forum Education Foundation of Santa Maria awarded a total of $25,000 in scholarships to 35 students on April 21, according to foundation treasurer Helen Galvan.

At its 38th annual scholarship awards ceremony, the foundation rewarded students who showed perseverance in their education. Scholarship applicants provided information on their grades and financial need, and they wrote application essays, as well. They also received teacher recommendations.

Though recipients were selected based in part on their GPAs, and many of them had GPAs higher than 3.5, Galvan said grades weren’t the most important factor in selecting scholarship recipients.

“We just figure it’s their drive to succeed, their commitment to education, what their letters said from some teachers,” Galvan said. “They’re not all the highest GPA, but they’re in there for the long haul.”

Recipients included nine students from local high schools, 17 students from Allan Hancock College, two students from community colleges out of town, and 10 students continuing their university education.
