Lady Bulldogs tournament teams up with Toys for Tots

Bulldogs fans will have a chance to see their hometown college defend its home court and help local families in need at the same time during the 16th annual Lady Bulldog Classic.

The Allan Hancock College women’s basketball team is getting into the holiday spirit by teaming up with the Toys for Tots Foundation of Santa Barbara County through the duration of the Classic. The three-day tournament opens at the Joe White Memorial Gymnasium on Dec. 11 and ends on Dec. 13.

Fans who bring an unwrapped toy worth $10 or more will receive a tournament pass worth $15 for entry to all three days of the Classic. Toys for Tots is collecting toys for children up to 17 years old.

In a press release from the college, volunteers with Toys for Tots said there is an increased need for assistance this year. The organization plans to distribute toys to 500 families in the Santa Maria area and 3,500 families through Santa Barbara County this holiday. Volunteers expect to distribute more than 20,000 toys to children in need.

As far as tournament goes, Cuesta College is returning to defend its title this year. Barstow—last year’s runner-up—Foothill, Lassen, Saddleback, Santa Barbara, and the Santa Maria All-Stars round out the eight-team field. Cuesta and Lassen are scheduled to play the tournament opener on Dec. 11 and 1 p.m. Santa Barbara and Barstow hit the court at 3 p.m., Hancock takes on the Santa Maria-All Stars at 5 p.m., and Foothill and Saddlebeck tip-off at 7 p.m.

The press release said Hancock enters the tournament on the heels of a two-game winning streak. For more info, call 922-6966, Ext. 3227.
