Discovery Corner: Join us for Nickelodeon's 11th annual Worldwide Day of Play

What’s the thing kids like to do most? Play, of course! These days it seems like a lot of play involves a screen of some sort, but on Sept. 20 the Discovery Museum will celebrate Nickelodeon’s 11th annual Worldwide Day of Play.

On this day, the beloved TV station will go dark as a way to encourage kids to get up, get outside, and play. According to nick.com, “Kids will shut off their computers, tablets, and TVs and get moving!”

This summer Nick hit the road and joined the fun in three cities across the country—San Diego, Detroit, and another city picked by the fans—to help kids get pumped about play.

While the museum inspires playtime every day, we’ll be celebrating this special event with a competitive obstacle course, games, and arts and crafts. Kids will get to make their own super hero capes on Sept. 20 in preparation for our first-ever Super Hero Fun Run 5K and 1-mile Family Walk, which is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 28, at 9 a.m. We’ll also be making capes on Sunday, Sept. 21, for those who can’t make it on the Worldwide Day of Play.

Registration is still open for the fun run at active.com, and we’ve added a “Virtual Runner” donation option for super heroes near and far who aren’t able to run. All proceeds from the run will go to the museum and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure for diabetes. Be sure to stick around after the run for our Fit for Fun Health Fair, which runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features healthy food, booths, and demonstrations by local fitness organizations.

The Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum is at 705 S. McClelland St. in Santa Maria. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
