Discovery Corner: Sundae Sunday and free programs galore!
BY CHRIS SLAUGHTER
There has never been a better time to be a member of the Discovery Museum. With new programs being offered every day and lots of special events, your membership pays for itself in less than five visits. And from now until July 1, new and renewing memberships, including a new grandparents membership program, are being offered at a 10 percent discount—just in time for summer.
In addition to our new programs and camps, we are kicking off the summer with a Members Only Sundae Sunday on June 22 from noon to 4 p.m. Guests get a free raffle ticket and a chance to win fun prizes. Ice cream sundaes will be provided by Doc Burnstein's, and kids will get the chance to conduct ice cream science experiments and make cool balloon crafts. Anyone beginning or renewing membership on that day also gets a free museum T-shirt with our fun new logo.
A new weekly program we are adding this week is Passport Thursday. Every week, we will be exploring traditions from around the world, from music, art, and clothing, to food and families. Kids make their own passports and get a stamp for each country they explore, with prizes for five or more stamps. We invite you to join us for a fun, cultural adventure this summer.
Science Saturday is going strong every week, along with other member favorites: Super Sunday, Tuesday Tales, and Wednesday's Preschool Patrol. All of these programs are offered free of charge for members, along with discounts for summer camps, birthday parties, and museum merchandise.
Membership also includes special events like our upcoming visit with Smokey the Bear on Saturday, June 28, and Princess Ariel during Tuesday Tales on July 1. Smokey the Bear will be teaching fire safety, and Ariel will share a part of her world with an enchanted story, a lesson on princess etiquette, and an opportunity to take pictures and sign autographs. Like us on Facebook at smvdiscoverymuseum to find out about our special events, weekly programs, and exhibits, and get daily tips on fun things to do with your kids.
The Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum is at 705 South McClelland St. in Santa Maria. We are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
