It takes a community to grow a festival

Go fly a kite! You have the amazing opportunity to do just that very soon. We are only two months away from April—National Kite Month—and getting ready for this year’s Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum Kite Festival! Hundreds and hundreds of people will travel from all over to Santa Maria on April 21 in celebration of this annual festival presented by the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum and the American Kite Association.

Our festival has grown tremendously since its inception, and the response continues to increase. What could be better than enjoying beautiful weather, the beautiful local area, and of course, the beautiful kites?

We invite you, our community, to join us as we grow our festival and continue to provide a fun, family event. This is a fantastic opportunity for local sponsorship! Your corporate sponsorship, vendor participation, and volunteer hours are greatly appreciated.

For more information about getting involved, please contact Karen Ortiz May at or Mary Garcia at, or call the museum at 928-8414.

Mary Garcia, program coordinator of the executive director of the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum, wrote this week’s Discovery Corner, a weekly column in the Sun, highlighting events, science activities, and more for the Santa Maria Valley Discovery Museum at 705 S.
