Fit health into life
BY RYAN MILLER
Eating right, getting fit, and staying healthy doesn’t happen in a day. It can’t. Such life-affirming (and preserving) activities are choices, made to incorporate into individual and family lifestyles.
Starting in January 2013, locals looking to walk the path of health will find help at Marian Regional Medical Center, where, thanks to a more than $44,000 grant from the Kohl’s Cares Program, locals will launch a year-round nutrition education and physical activity program, available through community and afterschool centers throughout Santa Maria and Guadalupe.
The Healthy for Life Wellness Program aims to teach children and families how to make healthy lifestyle and food choices and how to increase physical activity, according to a press release from the center. A main part of the goal is to decrease childhood obesity.
Class opportunities were announced at the Day of the Farm Worker event on Dec. 9 at the Santa Maria Fairpark Convention Center, 937 South Thornburg St., Santa Maria. Organizers estimated about 1,500 people attended the ceremony, where Kohl’s representatives presented a check.
All of the funds in the $44,332 grant were collected from Kohl’s stores in the Santa Maria area; the Kohl’s Cares Program allows its shops to sell $5 books and toys, with all of the net profits benefiting children’s health and education programs.
