Fire departments honor 9/11

BY RYAN MILLER

This Sept. 11 marks the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In remembrance of the
tragedy, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department will hold a ceremony on Sept. 11 at its headquarters at 4410 Cathedral Oaks Road in Santa Barbara. The event starts at 9 a.m.

Fire Chief Michael W. Dyer will give a brief message, followed by what’s being described as a
“patriotic moment.”

County residents are also invited to recognize the anniversary earlier in the day, at the time when the first plane struck the first of the Twin Towers in New York City. Each of the county’s 16 fire stations will be holding a brief ceremony at 6:58 a.m. Local stations include:

• Fire Station 21, 335 Union Ave., Orcutt

• Fire Station 22, 1596 Tiffany Drive, Santa Maria

• Fire Station 23, 5003 Depot Ave., Santa Maria

• Fire Station 24, 99 Centennial, Los Alamos

• Fire Station 30, 1644 Oak St., Solvang

• Fire Station 31, 168 W. Hwy 246, Buellton

• Fire Station 32, 906 Airport Road, Santa Ynez

• Fire Station 41, 41 Newsome St., New Cuyama

• Fire Station 51, 3510 Harris Grade Road, Lompoc

The New York City Fire Department lost 343 members during the attacks and their aftermath.
