Vendors doing business with the state of California—but who haven’t been paid yet because of the lack of a state budget—can now request an extension to file sales, use tax returns, and make tax payments, the California State Board of Equalization announced earlier this month. Businesses must make an extension request in writing and mail it to the Board or Equalization’s Return Analysis Unit at P.O. Box 942879, Sacramento, CA 94279-0035. The request must include the account number, the reporting period for the request, how much the state owes the business, and a reason for the extension request. The board has provided a form to request the extension at boe.ca.gov/pdf/boe468.pdf. If an extension is granted, businesses must file and pay the return by the end of the extension period. There will be no penalties if the return is filed and paid in full by the end of the extension period. For more information or assistance on requesting an extension, visit the Board of Equalization website at boe.ca.gov or call the Taxpayer Information Section Call Center at 1-800-400-7115. District office and call center operating hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding state holidays.
