Broken pipe causes damage and closures to East Battles Road

A fire hydrant pipe broke near the intersection of East Battles Road and South Broadway on Dec. 4, causing the pavement to buckle, which led to a lengthy lane closure on Battles.

The water pipe was repaired by 8 a.m. the following morning, and water service was restored to Rabobank, which had no water access during the repairs; it was the only business affected by the break, according to a city press release. Rabobank, however, remained open to customers for its normal hours during the repairs.

City repairmen discovered the culprit to be a tree root that had broken through a fire hydrant pipe, according to city Public Information Officer Mark van de Kamp.

Repairs to the pavement were still underway as of noon on Dec. 5, van de Kamp said, and the westbound lane of Battles closest to the sidewalk remained closed to traffic.
