Human remains discovered north of Montecito

Santa Barbara County Sheriff deputies discovered human remains near an abandoned vehicle in a canyon north of Montecito on Nov. 3.

In a press release from that day, the Sheriff’s Office said it was in the process of making a positive identification and that no additional information would be released due to the active investigation and until next of kin was notified, which was still the case when the Sun reached out to the agency Nov. 7.

“We are in the processing of identifying the remains at this time,” Lt. Kevin Huddle said in an email. “This may be a lengthy process. We have no additional information to provide at this time.”

Sheriff’s Office deputies, California Highway Patrol officers, and Santa Barbara County Fire personnel responded to a report of a vehicle seen over the side of Gibraltar Road, near East Camino Cielo a little after 9:15 a.m. on Nov. 3.

According to the release, first responders traversed the canyon where the car was located, reached the vehicle, and then discovered the remains.

The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team assisted in combing the area for evidence.

Highway Patrol was initially in charge of investigating the vehicle, but a spokesperson told the Sun on Nov. 7 that all aspects of the case had been handed over to the Sheriff’s Office.
