• On Feb. 5, Rep Lois Capps (D-Santa Barbara), co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Heart and Stroke Coalition, led efforts to highlight the impact of heart disease in women. On Tuesday, she spoke on the House floor to recognize American Heart Month. On Wednesday, Capps joined a bipartisan group of congresswomen and senators to raise awareness of the disparate impact of heart disease on women by recognizing National Wear Red Day.

“By wearing red, we unite with women from around the country to raise awareness of heart disease. We can and must continue to work together to reduce the number of our loved ones, friends, and neighbors affected by heart disease,” Capps said in a statement.

• On Feb. 5, Gov. Jerry Brown issued a proclamation declaring Feb. 6, 2016, as Ronald Reagan Day in the state of California.

In his proclamation, Brown said that Reagan lived the California dream, and urged Californians to remember his irresistible optimism, faith, and good humor, in addition to his political achievements.

“On this 105th anniversary of his birth, we remember not only his most celebrated achievements—his successful diplomacy with Mikhail Gorbachev and the economic recovery that occurred under his presidency. We also remember the turbulent years of his governorship, during which he proved his ability to manage the affairs of the state, and earlier, the talent and the skill he brought to his work in one of our state’s most renowned and beloved industries,” Brown said in a statement.

• In the weeks leading up to the California Coastal Commission’s Feb. 10 and 11 meeting in Morro Bay, 16 legislators, including Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson (D-Santa Barbara), signed and sent a letter to Gov. Jerry Brown, expressing their support for Charles Lester, executive director of the California Coastal Commission.

Citing the significant progress made under Lester’s leadership, they urged Gov. Brown to “weigh in with support to maintain the independence of the California Coastal Program staff and retain Lester as its respected and trusted leader.
