Community Corner: Give back to Santa Barbara County

The 22nd annual Day of Caring event in Santa Barbara County welcomed men, women, and children who together contributed an estimated $375,000 worth of volunteer hours to a variety of local causes and organizations in 2013.

This year, in advance of the 23rd annual event, United Way of Santa Barbara County announced that organizers have been anticipating a need for more volunteers.

The Day of Caring, set for Sept. 20, connects locals with more than 50 nonprofits throughout the county. Schools, parks, and churches will benefit from help given in the form of maintenance work, cleanup, gardening, and the like.

The day kicks off in the south with an 8 a.m. breakfast rally at Page Youth Center in Goleta, from which the volunteers will fan out across the county, hitting points in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Santa Maria.

A press release from United Way noted that some of the day’s projects include cleaning and painting at Casa Esperanza, making adobe bricks for the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation at the Presidio, orchard clean up at Alpha Resource Center, and gardening at Monroe Elementary School.
