Santa Maria Joint Union High School District reaches a tentative agreement with teachers

After an overnight negotiating session that followed more than a year’s worth of inconclusive negotiations, the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District and the district’s faculty association reached an agreement—albeit a tentative one. Both the district’s school board and members of the faculty association still need to ratify the agreement before it becomes a full-on contract.
At around 3:30 a.m. May 9, bargaining teams from both sides came to a tentative conclusion for the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years. Andrew Oman from the Santa Maria Regional Resource Center of the California Teachers Association said almost every article in the original contract was touched through the 14-month-long negotiating process.
Oman said the immediate effects of the agreement would be on teachers’ salaries. There will be a 4 percent salary increase retroactive—extending back to—July 1, 2013, and a 1.5 percent increase retroactive to Jan. 1, 2014. The association plans to review and vote on the agreement on May 15.
“This was a long and difficult process, and this was the best agreement we could reach given the circumstances,” Faculty Association President Mark Goodman said in a statement to the Sun. “This agreement will allow teachers to focus these last weeks of the school year on what is happening in the classroom.”
District Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum John Davis told the Sun that he couldn’t reveal much about the details of the agreement, but was excited the two parties were able to reach a tentative agreement.
The district’s school board will consider ratifying the contract once the faculty association has ratified it.
“We look forward to re-directing all of our energy to the important business of educating our young people,” District Superintendent Mark Richardson said in a statement released by the district.
