The Sun shone brightly in the 2013 National Newspaper Association Better Newspapers Contest, with three first-place awards and three second-place awards.
Former Arts Editor Shelly Cone won first place for her humor column, ‘To lie or not to lie?’ about the pros and cons of lying to your children. She took second in environmental reporting for her cover story on the effect of pesticides on bobcats.
Former Staff Writer Jeremy Thomas won first place for his Bleacher Bum column on suicides in professional football. He also won first place in the Freedom of Information category for his cover story on the death of a Lompoc penitentiary inmate.
Other awards include second place in the Freedom of Information category for Amy Asman’s cover story, “The life and death of Jerry Berns,” and a second place award for editorial cartoonist Ross Mayfield.
