CrossFit injury rates comparable to other activities

I’m writing about the article “Too much CrossFit? What can happen if you overdo it?” (Jan. 28).

I noticed that you did not include the injury rate from Dr. Hak’s study. You included the 73 percent prevalence rate, but that doesn’t really give the reader any useful information because it doesn’t include a time parameter. If 73 percent of athletes were injured during a one-hour workout that would be a ridiculously high injury rate, while 73 percent of athletes sustaining an injury over 50,000 hours of training is a very low injury rate. As you can see in Dr. Hak’s study, he calculated an injury rate of 3.1 injuries per 1,000 hours of training.

Dr. Hak also says, in addition to the contact sports that you mentioned, that “comparing adult fitness activities, including general gym/fitness club training; and long, middle, and sprint distance running; and triathlon training, the injury rates are also broadly similar to CrossFit training.”

I realize you probably didn’t have access to the full study itself and all this information—I was hoping that you’d be willing to include it (especially the injury rate information) to illuminate things for your readers a bit more.
