Civic Theatre starts new season

BY SHELLY CONE

The Santa Maria Civic Theatre recently announced the election of its officers for the 2009-2010 season. Clare Terrill is president, Bob Larsen is vice president, Angela Hutt-Chamberlin is secretary, Alan Foster is treasurer, and Nancy Kuneshigi, Michael Parsley, and Don Schuetee are members-at-large.

The upcoming season includes a dose of mystery coupled with comedy. Kicking the season off on Sept. 11 is Love, Sex, and the I.R.S., written by Billy Van Zandt and Jane Milmore. The show is a wild farce with twists of fate, sight gags, and mistaken identities. It’s directed by Johannes S. Beals.

Wake Up, Darling opens Nov. 20. The show is a comedy written by Alex Gottlieb and directed by Meg Smith—one of the founding members of the Santa Maria Civic Theatre. Auditions are scheduled for Sept. 21 and 22.

Mousetrap, written by Agatha Christie and directed by Larry Kami, had the longest initial run in theatrical history and is the longest-running play in history. This mystery has a twist ending nobody will want to miss. Auditions are scheduled for Dec. 7 and 8. The show opens Feb. 5.

Everyone Loves Opal was written by John Patrick and directed by Dorian Schuette. It’s a wacky and extravagant comedy about the infectiously cheerful Opal and a trio of down-and-out con artists who think Opal needs plenty of insurance and a rapid demise. Auditions are Feb. 15 and 16. The show opens April 30.
